Size: to 60 cm SL.

Habitat: Pelagic; freshwater; brackish; marine. Schooling adults occur along the coast, in estuaries, tidal rivers and tributaries during late spring and early summer.

Range: Atlantic coast of North America from the Bay of Fundy to Florida.

Diet: Small fishes, squid, small crabs and other crustaceans, and fish eggs.

Reproduction: Spawn in tidal freshwater, and return to the sea shortly after.
