Student Research Opportunities
Maine Space Grant Scholarship and Fellowship Program at the University of Southern Maine
2005-2006 Academic Year
The University of Southern Maine, as a member of the Maine Space Grant Consortium, has funds to award to three undergraduates ($2500 each).
NASA has five broad strategic enterprises around which they organize their research activities: aerospace technology, biological and physical research, earth science, space flight, and space science. Actually, they are interested in almost everything under and over the sun. Find information about the enterprises at NASA Strategic Enterprises. Links can also be found at the Maine Space Grant Consortium. Ms. Jana Hall at MSGC (1-877-397-7223 x250) can assist with identifying Centers and contacts.
Requirements of the award are: 1) work on a research and development project with a USM faculty mentor from September 2005 through April 2006, 2) travel (expenses paid) to a NASA center during the period of the award (e.g. inter-semester or February break), and 3) have a poster or oral presentation at the USM Thinking Matters conference and a written report by the conclusion of the project.
Preparation of Application:- Faculty review the above web sites, ask Sharon Locke questions at 228-8265, and formulate project opportunities.
- A student interested in the research opportunity contacts a faculty member, or a faculty member identifies a student to work with her or him on a research project. Women and minorities are encouraged to apply.
- Once there is mutual agreement to work together, the faculty member and the student prepare a brief written plan describing the project and the student's role in it - what will be accomplished and how the student will benefit. A NASA Center and a contact must be identified, preferably before submission of the plan, but certainly by September 2005.
- Submit the plan to Sharon Locke, 178 Science, by May 13, 2005.
