Overview
The RCG is the nexus for research computing at USM. The RCG is comprised of three divisions: Research and Development, Information Technology, and Education and Training. The R&D division pursues research and development projects in the areas of Bioinformatics, Environmental Science, GIS, Marine Informatics, and Public Health as well as development work with corporate and industrial partners. The IT division provides services, support, and consulting for specialized and scientific computing at USM. The Education and Training division has a long history of developing and delivering science, technology, engineering and math related web materials and pedagogical efforts.
Since 2001, the RCG has worked with a broad range of faculty, staff, and students to enable Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity at USM. The Research Computing Group (RCG) is located on the second floor of the New Research Wing of the Science Building on the Portland campus of the University of Southern Maine.
Mission
The mission of the RCG is threefold: 1) create and pursue basic and applied information science research and development initiatives; 2) provide high level, advanced, specialized technology consulting, collaboration, and support for research and development at USM; 3) develop, administer, and deliver technology and computer related education and training programs.
While research in information science can encompass a wide range of activity, RCG’s initial focus is to develop a research agenda focused on large data set acquisition, management, structure, analysis, and visualization. Its service mission focuses on providing information technology support for the high level, technologically complex needs of researchers and research units within the institution, and where appropriate, to entities outside USM. The education and training role is designed to provide an administrative structure for offering both credit-bearing computer literacy course and non-credit information science and technology corporate training opportunities.
