Thinking Matters:

A Student Research, Scholarship, and Creativity Symposium

Thinking Matters

April 17, 2009

Statement of Purpose:
The public exchange of ideas is a central feature of university life. The purpose of the Thinking Matters conference is to provide a public forum for USM students and invited guests to share the results of student research, and in doing so, encourage student initiative and celebrate its result. It is also our hope that within this environment of academic challenge a sense of camaraderie will be fostered throughout the USM community.

This community whether USM or the greater Southern Maine community continually witness civic matters. Like citizens, scholars impact the social and political world around them. They broker relationships in the course of their research and shape collective knowledge when they publish or present. Like citizens, then, scholars have a responsibility to reflect on the public impact of their work and consider how to use it to make a better world. Civic Matters locates the civic in our scholarship, inviting the exchange.
