Thinking Matters:
A Student Research, Scholarship, and Creativity Symposium
Thinking Matters
April 17, 2009
Innovative teaching and creative work - whether in a lab or in a studio - are the heart of any dynamic university culture. Thinking Matters is a one-day, once-a-year event, but it is the capstone that reflects what's going on all year long in departments all across campus.
In 2003, USM faculty and research staff founded Thinking Matters to promote opportunities for USM students to participate in high quality student-faculty research collaborations and to hold an annual event showcasing and communicating the results of these efforts. Since then, hundreds of students - both graduate and undergraduate - have participated in the program, along with those participating through a partnership with Southern Maine Community College (SMCC).
With the additions of oral presentations, keynote addresses, and roundtable sessions, a simple research poster day begun in 2003 has matured into today's Thinking Matters, a comprehensive conference that allows students and faculty from all fields to share their work with each other, their colleagues, and the general public. Topics are not limited to the sciences, engineering and technology - they reflect the range of creative work and learning at USM including in health professions like nursing and sport science, and the arts.
